The problem with submitting articles to the same article directory over and over again is that all of the links you are getting for your site are coming from one website. Search engines want to see links coming from a variety of sources.
If I submit 100 unique articles to the same article submission site search engines will only give me credit for 1 or 2 of those links. Now if I do free article submission to 100 different article sites then it is very likely that I will get credit for 60-100 links all from different sites.
You are only going to get credit for 1-2 links from any one article submission site so you might as well take all of your unique articles and spread them out over many of these sites.
